Pray and Serve Project Homeless Connect
Prayer goes before any kingdom building connection. I am praying that we will rally around the April 10 effort to help the homeless who live among us connect with Help Hope Home. Project Homeless Connect participants include Clark County Social Services, Nevada Legal Services, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Neighborhood Services Department of the City and the Community Interfaith Council, including the Rescue Mission, Catholic , Lutheran and Salvation Army social services. These people have been in the trenches for years and they know what works and what doesn't.
Las Vegas residents are charitable people but the workers, who strive to move the homeless off the street and back into society, sadly point out the fallacy of well-meaning people just driving up and opening the back of the SUV to dump out food and clothing. It turns into a demeaning free for all among those scrambling to pick up free stuff and leaves piles of debris behind. Three meals a day are served to the homeless where these services are centralized. They can find more than food and shelter at the shelters provided on Owens Street.
Let's pray about joining in this well orchestrated event that will bring three thousand homeless people into Cashman Field in an orderly process to tell us what they need and allow us to be instrumental in guiding them to services to meet their needs and create a path out of homelessness. You can learn how to make eternal connections during this event if you contact Pastor John Yesh, at BoulderCityBaptist@hotmail.com. Pastor John has led the way by pitching in to help the other agencies fill in gaps to serve the homeless in cooperation with the experts. By doing so, he has learned how to create a space within the overall system to meet with people for counsel, prayer, and personal conversations. His irrepressible warmth makes room for Pastor John. We are invited to go through open doors to reach the lost on April 10 at Project Homeless Connect.
You can become a volunteer by registering on-line at www.helphopehome.org or telephone Barbara Grostick at 702-455-5719. Whether it be working with children, guiding adults through the maze of providers to find the services they need, or manning a booth and meeting folks, there will be a myriad of opportunities to connect to pray and serve those whose need is greatest in our community. We'll be looking forward to meeting more of you at Cashman Field all day April 10. I'll be wearing my bright yellow Metro Police Volunteer shirt:-}
